Sleep Apnea Risk Factors

Are You at Risk ?

You may be living with sleep apnea and not know it.

People who have sleep apnea often have one or more of these diseases:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmia)
  • Heart failure
  • Severe acid reflux (gastroesophageal reflux disease)
  • Endocrine or metabolic disorders (including thyroid disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, and others)

These things also increase your risk of sleep apnea:

  • Personal history of heart attacks
  • Family history of sleep apnea
  • Being overweight (obesity)
  • Heavy drinking (more than 3 drinks/day)
  • Taking a lot of sedatives or tranquilizers
  • Smoking
  • Large neck size

If you have 3 or more of these risk factors, talk to your doctor about getting tested for sleep apnea.
